MCI To Trial Optical Cross-Connect System

MCI announced what it is calling the first step in the creation of the world’s first all-optical telecommunications network, with the field trial of an optical cross-connect system. These optical devices are a fundamental building block in the development of an all optical network that will eventually enable MCI to more efficiently manage its network to provide the highbandwidth services that customers are expected to demand in the new millennium.

MCI will trial the technology using Hitachi Telecom’s Optical Cross-Connect System on its fiber ring in Dallas, Texas. The trial will test live voice, video, and data applications, including ATM and frame relay, on the existing SONET network.
