BWE Employs News Automated mBlast Publishing SystemmBlast By Danny Briere January 31, 2002 Robert Hoskins almost accidentally wound up as publisher of one on-line magazine. Using mBLAST, he’s parlayed that one Web site into 12 sites, creating the broadband wireless community’s mostthorough source of news and information in the process. Hoskins, a veteran PR representative in the telecommunications services field, was working for Sprint and its fixed wireless service, when he decided to compile a list of other broadband wireless companies to prove Sprint was not alone in the field. That list led to other lists, then to a newsgroup and ultimately to the Website that became Broadband Wireless Exchange. Today that site is the mothership for the other 11, a success Hoskins directly attributes to mBLAST. “We had 400,000 hits five months ago, and now we’ve got more than 5.5 million hits per month. There’s no way to even fathom how I would have done this without mBLAST,” Hoskins states. As it is, he sets up mBLAST retrievers to scour the Web on a 24-hour basis and each morning deliverto his desktop all the news articles, press releases, White Papers, books, events and research papers related to the specific topics covered by his 12 publications, which include sites devoted to wireless LANs built on 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards. Hoskins can then go through the assembled material, decide if he wants to use it for one or more ofthe sites and, again using mBLAST tools, post it on the specific site, in a presentation style previouslyset up on mBLAST. “With mBLAST, posting an item to the Web site has been reduced to one click. No programming, no uploading, nothing. Just one click.” In addition, Hoskins has used mBLAST capabilities to automate the process of compiling a series ofBuyers’ Guides of wireless products. Rather than go through the tedious steps of creating a surveyand mailing or emailing it out to multiple individuals, Hoskins can set up a Buyers Guide usingmBLAST’s automated tools, invite companies and contacts in to use it, and even allow a previewperiod during which survey participants can suggest changes or additions to the survey. Once the survey is completed, mBLAST allows him to automatically upload it onto his Web site as a matrix, or download it directly on to a PC in an Excel or XML format. “One of the features I really like is that people can go back in and update the buyers’ guide any time they want,” says Hoskins. “Whereas if I’m reading a printed buyers guide on LAN cards fromNovember 2002, I know it’s out of date. Using mBLAST, we create an almost real-time buyers’ guide that will always remain current.” Hoskins puts out 15 Buyers’ Guides, sometimes assembling information from one survey that supports multiple different guides. As a marketing veteran, Hoskins also appreciates the mBLAST tools that allow anyone to update their profile, logo or other information and publish it once to mBLAST, knowing it will then flow through automatically to anyone using the service. “The truth is that anyone using mBLAST can build a publication overnight,” he concludes.
