BWE Announces the Top 10
Wireless Internet Service Providers for 2006
Gilbert, Ariz. - 4/28/06 - BWE announced the
winners of its annual Top 10 Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) survey.
The research survey ranks wireless ISPs based on the number of residential and
business customers that receive high-speed wireless Internet access via fixed
antennas mounted at the customer’s premises.
This year’s winners of the Top 10 WISP awards were either using MMDS or
outdoor Wi-Fi coverage based on 802.11 technologies provided by vendors such as
Strix Systems, Sky Pilot Networks and Motorola’s Canopy product lines.
Broadband wireless service is delivered using protected wireless spectrum in
the 2.5GHz MMDS frequencies or using public spectrum located in the 900 MHz,
2.4GHz or the 5GHz frequencies.
None of the Wireless ISPs were using WiMAX technology, but that is expected
to change in the next 12-18 months as WiMAX equipment becomes available in the
marketplace and prices begin dropping due to volume shipments.
"WiMAX certified equipment is already available at 3.5GHz, the most allocated
frequency band for WiMAX outside the US," stated Maravedis Senior Analyst,
Adlane Fellah. "WiMAX certified equipment in the 2.3 and 2.5GHz should be
available on a commercial basis in the beginning of 2007. Until then all BWA
deployments in the US will remain based on proprietary systems."
The winners of the Top 10 Wireless ISP
Awards for 2006 are as follows, ranked in order:
- Mobile Pro Corp.
- Clearwire Wireless
Broadband
- SpeedNet Services, Inc.
- Plateau Meganet Internet

“We are proud to acknowledge the leaders of broadband wireless industry and
we want to give them the credit they deserve in a public forum,” said Robert
Hoskins, Broadband Wireless Exchange
Magazine’s Editor in Chief. “The wireless industry has changed a great deal
since we began handing out these awards in 2001. In those days no one had every
heard of a wireless ISP, but nowadays it is very hard to find someone that has
not heard of a Wi-Fi hotspot, a municipal mesh network or the advantages of
WiMAX wireless technology.”
Hoskins continued, “We predict that in the next 2-5 years, through the
combination of Wi-Fi and WiMAX broadband wireless technologies, that high-speed
Internet access through a wide variety of devices such as personal digital
assistants, Wi-Fi cell phones and/or laptop computers will be as common as cell
phones are today, but with a much better set of features and benefits.”
